“White Dunce Cap Mushroom”
(Conocybe apala)
It is not long
before true subsistence aches,
before its brief wake is cut
for yet another secluded slumber –
metabolizing back down through
the green waxy blades,
back down beneath the root-woven floor
to dream, and dream, and dream again
of what it means to briefly wallow
in such a feverish foreign sun –
to dream, and dream, and dream again
of morning’s moist, tantalizing dew.
